Jennifer Vashon, bear biologist, talks about Maine’s bears

Jennifer Vashon, one of Maine’s bear biologists, was a guest with Tom Saviello on Talkin’ Maine. I was happy to see the show on Vimeo as this isn’t a program I can watch at home.

Have you ever wondered how biologists age a bear? Are sows pregnant during hunting season? And when do they give birth? There’s a lot of myths and misinformation about black bears. Until a few years ago I believed bears slept all winter, and that sows gave birth while asleep, and woke up to surprise! cubs. It sounds ridiculous as I write this but it was a common “fact”. You can still find that “fact” on significant websites. Grab a drink and settle in for 30 minutes worth of great information about our black bears.
