I was eager to get to the bait barrel to see if the bear had returned. For the first time in six and a half weeks, I knew the barrel had been hit as soon as I saw it from the path. The log with the skunk essence hadn’t been moved but the other two were out of sight, pushed through the hole in the back of the barrel. Yes! He…she…it came back. I refilled the small pail. Without thinking because it’s completely habit to grab the log and move it out of the way when you’re baiting, I grabbed the log…and moved it out of the way…and the skunk essence hit me like a ton of stink. I grabbed the essence.
The game camera caught three pictures of the bear. I saved them to the memory card in the card viewer. I went to the laptop immediately when I got home, slipped the memory card in, and took a look.
It took a few minutes to fully process the information. The log with the skunk essence hadn’t been moved but the other two were out of sight, pushed through the hole in the back of the barrel. The only log sticking out of the barrel this morning is the one with essence. When this bear left there were two logs sticking out. The camera didn’t turn on when the second log was pushed through the barrel. I’ll adjust the camera when I go in this afternoon. I want more of the ground and more of the view on the right to show up.
I’m getting ready to leave for BOW’s Intro Skills weekend. I’ll have a late night and early morning to make up for sitting at the bait today. It’s the last chance I have until Monday.
